Washington Navaya, the leading scorer in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, has been named to Zimbabwe’s 24-man squad for the upcoming international friendlies. Navaya’s selection follows an outstanding domestic season, highlighted by 17 goals, and marks his first call-up under new coach Marian Marinica. Zimbabwe is set to play Algeria in Saudi Arabia on November 13, followed by a match against Qatar, as the team prepares for the Africa Cup of Nations in December.
Navaya, previously overlooked by former coach Michael Nees, joins fellow top scorer Tymon Machope in the squad. While most of the roster remains unchanged, young midfielders Prosper Padera and Sean Fusire return after missing the last World Cup qualifiers. Vice-captain Marshall Munetsi will miss the friendlies, and Khama Billiat has not been included. Assistant coach Kaitano Tembo and goalkeepers coach Pernel McKop continue in their roles. The football association has also announced a post-season training camp for local players, who will later join foreign-based teammates in Morocco for pre-tournament preparations.
