The National Democratic Working Group has accused Zimbabwe's ruling party of engineering the detention of opposition figure Job Sikhala after South African authorities discovered explosives in his vehicle last week in Pretoria. NDWG spokesperson Isaya Ndawana claimed the materials were deliberately placed to frame Sikhala and connect him to a recent arson attack on the SAPES Trust building in Harare, asserting that Zanu PF possesses the financial means and intelligence capabilities to conduct such cross-border operations.
Sikhala and his co-accused uncle, Alexander Ferrowst Thema, appeared before magistrates on Monday with their case adjourned until Thursday while they remain in custody. Ndawana suggested the arrest was designed to silence the activist's criticism of the government's Agenda 2030 initiative.
Zanu PF Information Director Farai Marapira rejected the allegations as typical opposition tactics, stating that party members routinely commit offenses before attempting to politicize their legal troubles, emphasizing that authorities will prosecute lawbreakers regardless of political affiliation.
