Nekundi Big Win Seals Otjiwarongo for Swapo

Swapo party member Paulus Nekundi claimed victory at Otjiwarongo's special election Tuesday. Electoral Commission of Namibia returning officer Melody Muesee declared Nekundi the new constituency councillor Wednesday. Nekundi earned 3,235 votes to win the seat. Popular Democratic Movement candidate Ernst Muraranganda came second with 810 votes. Independent Patriots for Change representative Wilbardt Haihambo received 746 votes.

Gabriel Manse from Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters captured 126 votes to finish fourth. Voters cast 4,935 ballots total with 35 marked as spoiled. Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. Tuesday and closed at 9 p.m. that evening. Officials counted votes immediately after polls closed. Muesee announced final results at Vooruit Primary School Hall.

The Electoral Commission registered 27,870 eligible voters for this special election. The vote became necessary after constituency councillor Marlayn Mbakera left her position. Mbakera joined parliament March 21, creating the vacant seat. The election filled the empty council position left behind. Nekundi steps into the role as the area's new representative.
