Nepal's Karki vows to end graft as Gen Z protests force new election

Sushila Karki assumed leadership as Nepal's interim prime minister following youth-driven demonstrations that removed her predecessor from power. The 73-year-old former chief justice pledged to combat corruption and address economic inequality after Generation Z protesters demanded governmental reform. Mass demonstrations erupted over social media restrictions and long-standing financial hardships affecting the Himalayan nation.

Violence during the protests resulted in 72 deaths and 191 injuries across two days of unrest. Young activists used digital platforms to select Karki as their preferred leader during intense negotiations. Parliament was dissolved with elections scheduled for March 2026.

Nepal faces significant economic challenges, with youth unemployment reaching 20 percent among citizens aged 15 to 24 years. The country's per capita income remains at $1,447 for its 30 million residents. Security concerns persist as more than 12,500 prisoners escaped detention facilities during the civil disorder.
