New wave of social apps reshapes Zimbabwe scene

The global social media landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, moving away from the long-standing dominance of platforms like Facebook and X. Newer services such as TikTok and Threads are gaining traction by prioritizing algorithm-driven engagement and authentic content, which strongly appeals to younger demographics. These platforms integrate advanced features like e-commerce and influencer marketing, creating fresh opportunities for creators and businesses.

In Zimbabwe, this shift presents both potential and challenges. While Facebook and WhatsApp remain widely used, the growing popularity of TikTok and Instagram Reels is changing how youth consume content and opening international avenues for local artists and small enterprises. This evolution increases the demand for digital skills in areas like video production and analytics.

Conversely, this reliance on foreign platforms raises issues concerning data privacy and cultural influence. For local businesses and creators to remain competitive, they must strategically adapt to these evolving digital environments and the emerging technologies that define them.
