New Zealand bats first as veterans mark milestones

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss and chose to bat first against South Africa in a Women's World Cup match on Monday at Holkar Stadium. Both teams suffered opening defeats in the tournament, with New Zealand losing by 89 runs to Australia and South Africa falling by 10 wickets to England. Neither side made changes to their starting lineups for the encounter.

The match marked milestone appearances for two New Zealand players. Veteran Suzie Bates played her 350th international game for the country, while Devine competed in her 300th match for the White Ferns. Devine said the pitch remained consistent from the previous game, and her team understood what total would be competitive against South Africa's bowling attack.

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt expressed comfort with either batting or chasing on what she expected to be a good wicket. Both teams sought their first victory after disappointing starts to the tournament.
