Newzoo admits the video game market's easy growth is officially dead

Newzoo released its Global Games Market Report for 2025, showing the video game industry revenue will climb to $188.8 billion this year. Console platforms drive the 3.4 percent annual growth, largely because of the Nintendo Switch 2 launch. Mobile gaming maintains market dominance with $103 billion in revenue and 55 percent market share despite slower 2.9 percent growth. The global player base spans 3.58 billion people across all platforms. Mobile attracts 3 billion users, while PC gaming reaches 936 million, and consoles serve 645 million players.

Analysts project the total market value will expand to $206.5 billion by 2028. Console revenue growth leads all segments at 4.7 percent annually through 2028, boosted by major releases like Grand Theft Auto VI. PC gaming will surpass one billion players for the first time in industry history. Mobile gaming retains the fastest player growth rate despite console hardware gains. Newzoo emphasizes that successful companies must focus on player retention and ecosystem development rather than simply acquiring new users.
