Nigeria celebrated a century of aviation history on Saturday as the nation recognized the landmark arrival of three British Royal Air Force De Havilland DH.9A planes that touched down in Maiduguri 100 years earlier. The aircraft, led by Air Marshal Sir Arthur Coningham, completed a journey from Helwan in Egypt and continued toward Kano, marking what historians consider the birth of Nigerian civil aviation on Nov. 1, 1925.
The Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative praised the federal government for honoring this achievement. President Air Commodore Ademola Onitiju said the sector has experienced a complex transformation across leadership, regulation, safety standards, airport development and consumer protections. The organization is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development on year-long festivities that will reach their peak on Dec. 1, 2025.
Events planned under the theme 100 Years of Aviation in Nigeria: The Gains, The Pains, and The Prospects will feature expert panels and presentations from industry veterans. State governments with substantial aviation investments have been invited to organize local programs highlighting career opportunities for young people. The initiative emphasized that this milestone provides an opportunity to assess progress and plan for enhanced safety and growth.
