Nigerian Court tosses fake charges as Mahdi Shehu walks free

A Nigerian journalist just beat all criminal charges after a court tossed the entire case against him. Muhammad Mahdi Shehu and his company Dialogue Global Links Limited walked free when a Federal High Court in Kano ruled that prosecutors completely failed to prove anything against them. The judge cleared them on all six counts after accepting a no-case submission.

The Office of the Inspector-General of Police filed the charges back in 2021 on behalf of the Katsina State Government. Shehu got hit with accusations of cybercrime, trashing people's reputations, passing around bogus documents, and spreading lies that supposedly made Katsina State officials look bad.

The whole ordeal dragged on for almost four years and cycled through four different trial judges. Shehu had to show up for arraignment four separate times. Prosecutors brought six witnesses to testify, pulling them from the IGP's office and the Katsina State Government.

The presiding judge spent around two hours reading a 70-page decision that ripped apart the prosecution's case. Shehu said the court found that witnesses contradicted themselves and couldn't be trusted, and that prosecutors never established a prima facie case on any of the six charges.

Shehu dropped the news on his verified X account, confirming that the criminal proceedings against him and his media company are officially done.
