Nine people will run for the Kawempe North Parliament seat. Four signed up on Wednesday, and five signed up on Thursday.
The candidates are Murerwa Hanifa Karadi (independent), Luwemba Lusswa Muhammed (independent), Luyimbazi Elias Nalukoola (National Unity Platform), Mukiibi Sadat (Forum for Democratic Change), Nsereko Moses (independent), Musiitwa Ismail (People's Progressive Party), Mutazindwa Muhamood (independent), Kasacca Henry Mubiru (Democratic Party), and Faridah Nambi Kigongo (National Resistance Movement).
The election has already seen bad violence from security forces. On Wednesday, Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce commandos attacked NUP candidate Nalukoola and many of his supporters.
Nalukoola tried to walk to Mbogo mosque in Kawempe to speak to his supporters after his nomination. JAT commandos arrested him roughly and kept him for a short time at Kawempe police station before letting him go.
During this trouble, the commandos hurt TV reporter Miracle Ibrah badly. He is staying at Nsambya Hospital.
But on Thursday, NRM candidate Faridah Nambi led a march to the nomination place, which continued to Mbogo mosque afterward. Nambi talked to her supporters at Mbogo mosque—the same place where Nalukoola was stopped from speaking.
Nalukoola said security forces were using different rules for different people.
The Kawempe North MP seat became empty after MP Muhammad Ssegirinya died.
People will vote on March 13, 2025.
