Nalukoola Arrest Ignites Wild Kawempe North Election Storm

The police took Elias Nalukoola to the Kawempe Police Station today. They arrested him right after he signed up to try and become the new Member of Parliament for Kawempe North. Elias is the person the National Unity Platform (NUP) party wants to win. No one knows yet why the police arrested him.

Elias wants to replace Muhammad Ssegirinya, who used to be the MP but sadly died. Earlier today, Elias told reporters that someone stole his official nomination papers. He also said that one of his helpers was kidnapped. Even with these problems, Elias still managed to submit his papers and officially become a candidate.

The election to find a new MP is causing some arguments. Two people from the biggest parties, NUP and the National Resistance Movement (NRM), decided not to listen to their parties. They signed up to run on their own. Luwemba Lusswa Muhammed from NUP and Hanifa Karadi Murerwa from NRM did this. Their parties warned them they might get in trouble or even be kicked out, but they still went ahead.

Luwemba used to help the MP who died. He thought NUP should let him run for them, but the party chose Elias instead. Luwemba says he is still part of NUP. He is just running on his own because he feels the party is not fair to him.

In the NRM party, Karadi is unhappy that they picked Faridah Nambi to run for them. Faridah's dad is a very important person in NRM. Karadi thinks Faridah only got chosen because of who her dad is. She says the way NRM picked their candidate was not honest. Karadi decided to run on her own to show she disagreed with what happened.

Faridah says Karadi is not telling the truth. She says NRM followed all the right rules. She also says if anyone is upset, there are ways within the party for them to talk about it.

Elias's arrest makes an already tense election even more heated. People are worried about whether things will be fair. The leaders and supporters of NUP are very angry. They want Elias to be let go right away.

The voting to decide who will be the new MP for Kawempe North will happen on March 13, 2025. This election will show how loyal people are to their parties. It will also test how well the parties listen to their members and how much power different politicians have in this part of the capital, where many oppose the government.

We will share more news as we learn what happens next.
