Nissan’s rearview cam ghosted drivers, software said “nah”

Nissan is recalling a bunch of its newest SUVs because a software bug can kill the backup camera. This affects over sixty thousand vehicles, specifically the 2025 Nissan Armada and Murano, plus the 2025 and 2026 Infiniti QX80 models. The glitch in the infotainment system might stop the camera feed from popping on when you shift into reverse, which is a major safety problem since those cameras are federally required.

The company says they will fix it with a software update, done for free either at a dealer or wirelessly. Owners should get a letter about it by early January 2026. Until then, drivers with concerns can call Nissan at 800-647-7261 or Infiniti at 800-662-6200. The recall numbers are R25D6, R25D5, and R25D7. People can also check the NHTSA website or call its hotline at 888-327-4236 for more info.

This whole situation is another example of digital flaws creating actual physical danger. As cars get more dependent on code, a simple software error can directly impact something as basic as seeing what is behind you when you back up.
