No funny business with loss funds in Akwa Ibom

The Peace Point Development Foundation asked Nigerian officials at both the national and state levels to ensure everyone can see how they handle climate damage money. The group shared this message after they met in Uyo to discuss what happened at the big climate conference last year. They want local governments and community groups to watch carefully where this money goes when it arrives. The cash should help places hurt by oil companies and gas burning.

The foundation believes the World Bank should not control these funds because they still give money to companies that dig up oil and gas. They asked Akwa Ibom leaders to create a special budget that deals with climate problems in their area. The group worries about big oil companies having too much power at climate meetings around the world. These corporations shape what people discuss and decide, which stops real progress on moving away from fossil fuels.

They want Akwa Ibom's environment department to team up with citizen groups to plan for the next big climate meeting in Brazil. The foundation thinks it was wrong for America to back out of the Paris climate deal. They believe rich industrial countries need to cut down on pollution from fossil fuels first. These wealthy nations should also provide financial help to poorer countries trying to switch to cleaner energy choices.

Parts of their official statement pointed out that the state government needs clear rules for getting climate damage money to places that need it most. They mentioned how climate change already causes problems, with higher temperatures and ocean water covering coastal towns like Itak Abasi. Akwa Ibom faces serious risks because it sits next to the Atlantic Ocean, which means local leaders must take climate threats seriously. The $300 billion promised for climate help falls way short of the $1.3 trillion experts say is needed.
