People who check on the government found something strange about a coffee factory in Uganda. Mr. Joel Ssenyonyi leads these people, and he told Parliament no proper papers were saying how the factory should work with the government. This matters because the government gave lots of money to help build this factory.
The factory belongs to a businessman named Nelson Tugume. When people went to see the factory in Ntungamo, Mr. Tugume could not tell them exactly how much money the government gave him. This made many people worried because they wanted to know what happened to their tax money.
The factory started being built in October 2023. People hoped it would make many things from coffee, like instant coffee, coffee drinks, and even beauty products. Many coffee farmers asked questions about why this factory was built in Ntungamo instead of places where more coffee grows.
The government set aside 37 billion shillings last year to improve coffee, and it added another 75 billion shillings this year, spending 112 billion shillings on coffee projects. Mr. Tugume said his factory would need 451 billion shillings to finish.
Mr. Ssenyonyi wants the government to explain everything about this factory. He thinks they should stop giving money until they make proper agreements. He said many young people in Uganda have good ideas but need money to make them work. The government should tell everyone how they choose who receives help.
