North Bengal landslides kill 23 as rain wreaks havoc

North Bengal landslides killed 23 people as of Monday morning after heavy rainfall struck the hills, Terai, and Dooars regions. The National Disaster Response Force compiled the figure with district administrators from Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri, but officials believe the count may rise as crews continue rescue operations. Governor C.V. Ananda Bose opened a rapid action center at the Governor's House to handle emergency calls from residents and stranded tourists. The facility assigned a special duty officer and established a helpline for affected individuals to reach authorities.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee planned to visit North Bengal later on Monday to assess conditions. She advised tourists to remain at their current locations while rescue teams work to evacuate them from disaster zones. The chief minister instructed hotels and lodges not to charge extra fees to stranded guests. Abhishek Banerjee told Trinamool Congress volunteers to assist affected communities with support and resources.
