NPP Powerbroker Rallies Behind Ofori Atta Scandal

Frederick Blay stands behind Ken Ofori-Atta as Ghana's former money chief. Blay led the NPP party and spoke out for Ofori-Atta during a Saturday TV interview. He called the former minister a strong leader who worked hard under tough times. Blay said critics unfairly blame Ofori-Atta for problems he did not create. The former party head believes the NPP government will be remembered as one of Ghana's best.

Ofori-Atta ran Ghana's money affairs from 2017 until early 2024. Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam took over his job as the new finance minister. People called for Ofori-Atta to be fired during Ghana's money crisis. President Akufo-Addo kept him despite public anger about the economy. The president and Ofori-Atta are cousins.

Corruption investigators target the former finance minister. They want to question him about the National Cathedral project and other deals. Interpol put him on their red notice list at Ghana's request. Reports say he receives medical care overseas. Blay feels sad about how officials treat former government workers and warns this might scare away smart people from public jobs.
