NPP targets its own elites in a bid to stop vote buying

Over 5,500 New Patriotic Party delegates assembled in Accra on July 19, 2025, for their National Annual Delegates Conference. The gathering follows the party's 2024 election loss and centers on constitutional reforms under the theme "Rebuilding Together with Our Values." Party leaders propose eliminating the Special Electoral College system that critics claim concentrates power among elites. The reform would create an expanded Electoral College allowing broader participation in presidential primaries. Conference organizers plan to discuss more than 50 constitutional amendments.

Planning Committee Chairman Joseph Osei-Owusu announced strict prohibitions on campaign materials throughout the venue and Accra. The party deployed monitoring teams to remove unauthorized banners, posters, and promotional items from aspiring candidates. Political analysts view these reforms as essential steps toward democratizing internal party processes. Dr. Samuel Kofi Darkwa praised the proposed changes as meaningful progress toward reducing elite influence. The conference represents the NPP's attempt at rebuilding after its worst electoral performance since 1992.
