Nujoma Body Arrives in Windhoek Ahead of Final Procession

The body of Namibia's first President, Dr. Sam Nujoma, arrived in Windhoek on Thursday afternoon. This marks the final stage of the Regional Processions before the liberation hero's burial on Saturday. Dr. Nujoma died at 95 years old in a Windhoek hospital on February 8, 2025. People have celebrated his rich legacy across Namibia and neighboring countries.

A memorial service will happen at the Independence Stadium on Friday. President Mnangagwa will give one of the main speeches at this event. The burial will take place the next day at Namibia's National Heroes' Acre in the capital city.

Namibian President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba received Dr. Nujoma's body at the Hosea Kutako International Airport. This began the Khomas Regional Route Procession. Khomas represents the largest region in Namibia and includes the capital, Windhoek. It serves as the eighth and final region to hold the regional procession. The government declared a period of national mourning after Dr. Nujoma's death.

Local media reports state that the ruling party, Swapo, will unveil a statue of Dr. Nujoma holding a baby at the party headquarters on Thursday. Party spokesperson Hilma Nicanor confirmed they will hold a memorial service at the headquarters as well. "We will have the unveiling of the founding president's statue at the Swapo headquarters at 11:00, followed by a memorial service at 14:00," she said. According to the publication, the baby in Nujoma's arms represents a survivor of the Cassinga massacre.
