The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa plans to march to the National Treasury in Pretoria on Friday to demand action against security companies that withhold worker benefits. Union spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said that firms deduct medical insurance and pension contributions from employee wages but fail to transfer the funds to the providers. Workers cannot access benefits when filing claims because accounts lack sufficient money.
The union wants the Treasury to terminate contracts with noncompliant businesses and prevent them from bidding on government tenders. Companies named in the complaint include Modise Security, Mjayeli Security, Kya Guard Security and Urban Ithuba Security. These firms allegedly violate National Bargaining Council agreements for the private security sector.
