Nzima's 222 kmh Mercedes stunt shames lawyers

A Mthatha attorney received a R40,000 fine after admitting to driving 222 kilometers per hour in a 120-kilometer-per-hour zone of the N2 highway. Monde Nzima fled from traffic officers who attempted to stop his Mercedes-Benz near Park Rynie on Friday, Aug. 2. The Scottburgh Magistrate's Court suspended half of his 24-month alternative sentence for five years on Sunday, Oct. 27.

Road Traffic Inspectorate officers T. Simpson and R. Brijlall pursued the 32-year-old lawyer after he accelerated away from their checkpoint. KwaZulu-Natal transport officials praised the arrest and asked the Legal Practice Council to review whether his actions meet professional standards. Authorities emphasized that excessive speed endangers lives and creates hardship for families affected by crashes.

The conviction demonstrates continued enforcement efforts as South Africa addresses traffic fatalities. Nzima faces immediate imprisonment if he commits similar violations before the suspended portion of his sentence expires. The transport department questioned whether the legal profession accepts such conduct from its members.
