Oakland parole officer shot dead as suspect hijacks bus and manhunt unfolds

Gunfire claimed the life of a state parole officer during work hours Thursday at an Oakland government facility. The deadly attack happened at 12:48 p.m. at the California parole offices on Edgewater Drive near Interstate 880 and Hegenberger Road. Emergency responders transported the wounded male officer to Highland Hospital using a patrol car. Medical staff pronounced him dead upon arrival at the medical center.

The shooter escaped the scene by commandeering a public transit bus, according to television station KNTV. Police have not determined what motivated the fatal attack against the government employee. Authorities closed multiple streets surrounding the parole facility as investigators processed the crime scene. Law enforcement agencies have not identified the deceased officer or announced any arrests. Officers continue searching for the armed suspect who remains at large.
