ODM demands deputy slot as Ruto weighs options

Political observers suggest President William Ruto may select an Orange Democratic Movement running mate for the 2027 election after losing support in Mount Kenya, the region that backed him decisively in 2022. Following opposition leader Raila Odinga's death, acting ODM chair Oburu Oginga declared during a television interview on Sunday that his party would only accept the deputy president slot in any coalition arrangement.

Potential candidates include Treasury Secretary John Mbadi, Cooperatives head Wycliffe Oparanya, Mining Minister Hassan Joho, and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga. Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir confirmed ODM's openness to providing a running mate but stressed that selections must proceed through party channels. Seven Meru legislators warned on Monday against replacing current Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, while Western Kenya representatives endorsed Oparanya for the position.
