Ofosu Ampofo warns of rising cocoa smuggling

Ghana Cocoa Board leadership has raised alarms about smuggling operations draining production from border communities despite substantial government spending on cultivation support. Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo told reporters that security partnerships with district and regional councils will intensify to address the growing problem threatening sector sustainability.

Assessment findings reveal a significant gap between agricultural inputs distributed to farmers and actual yields recorded in frontier zones. Ofosu Ampofo emphasized that cocoa remains fundamental to national economic stability and requires urgent protective measures to boost productivity.

The board chairman commended President John Dramani Mahama for maintaining farmer payments at 70 percent of the FOB price amid fiscal constraints, demonstrating a continued commitment to agricultural producers.
