Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has ordered documentation of foreign workers employed by multinational firms and stricter vetting of new arrivals to bolster security amid rising violent crime nationwide. Speaking after a security briefing in Iperu, Abiodun revealed that authorities recently detained roughly 70 individuals from Niger, Sudan, and Chad who lacked proper identification and could not clarify their reasons for being in the state. He emphasized the need for heightened vigilance, given that Ogun receives over five million daily commuters because of its industrial activity.
The governor also highlighted concerns about scavengers and scrap dealers potentially serving as fronts for criminal operations. He instructed police to clear suspected hideouts in areas like Zanga in Ijebu-Ode and warned that properties linked to illegal activities would be seized. Abiodun called on residents to assist community policing efforts by reporting unusual behavior and cautioned traditional leaders against allocating land to unverified individuals, stating they would face consequences for enabling security breaches.
