Abia State Governor Alex Otti criticized pregnant women who choose traditional birth attendants over government hospitals. Professor Enoch Oggbonnaya Uche represented the governor at Ohiya Primary Health Centre on Friday during the facility's operationalization ceremony. The governor expressed concern about maternal deaths from complications at traditional delivery centers.
Otti's administration plans to retrofit 200 primary health centers across all wards in Abia State. The governor threatened decisive action against traditional birth facility operators to protect expectant mothers. Modern equipment was installed at the center, such as automatic external defibrillators, radiant warmers, vital signs monitors, ultrasound machines, parameter devices, weighing scales, general laboratories, and auto analyzers.
Umuahia South Local Government Area Mayor Chinedu Enwereuzo thanked the governor for the project improvements, but asked traditional rulers to guard against equipment vandalism.
