Authorities in Nandi County seized over 250 boxes of illegal alcohol during a large-scale operation led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse, working alongside the National Police Service. The raid, which took place in Mosoriot Market, resulted in one arrest and forms part of a wider effort to curb the distribution of counterfeit and unregulated alcohol across Kenya. Officials have sent the confiscated products for laboratory testing to determine their safety and compliance with national standards.
Nacada’s chief executive, Anthony Omerikwa, explained that the timing of the operation was aimed at protecting children during the school holidays, warning parents to stay alert and engage their children to prevent substance abuse. He emphasized that removing dangerous alcohol from circulation is essential for public health, particularly for youth. Despite repeated crackdowns, authorities note ongoing challenges in tackling the illicit alcohol trade, pointing to issues such as weak enforcement, border security gaps, and limited resources for testing. Data reveals that much of the illegal liquor trade is concentrated in western and Rift Valley regions, posing significant risks to both communities and law enforcement efforts.
