Overwatch Devs Stage Wild Union Takeover

Blizzard's Overwatch 2 staff have formed a union, with nearly 200 game developers joining the Communications Workers group. They are the second full team at Blizzard to unite, following the World of Warcraft staff's efforts last July. Microsoft has recognized this new group, which includes all roles from artists to testers. This represents another step forward for worker rights in the gaming industry. The team will begin discussions about their first contract soon.

Mass layoffs earlier this year pushed many workers toward organizing. Test analyst Simon Hedrick noted that people vanished without warning, which frightened those left behind. Senior tester Jess Castillo believes that coming together empowers staff to have a greater voice regarding working conditions. While unions cannot prevent all layoffs, they help create better outcomes when they do occur. The group hopes Microsoft will reach an agreement more quickly than other united teams that have encountered delays.
