An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to Ahmed Mohammed Lawal, a painter charged with stealing electrical cables from the Bank of Ghana building at Ridge. The court set bail at GH¢1 million with two sureties required. Judge Isaac Addo instructed prosecutors to follow proper disclosure rules during the hearing. The case will continue on May 7, 2025.
Lawal faces charges of unlawful entry and theft of electrical cables valued at GH¢1,035,500. He maintains his innocence. Assistant Superintendent of Police Agustin Kingsley Oppong leads the prosecution team. The complainants include Samuel Nii Tettey, a safety officer, and Davidson Mensah Otinkorang, an electrical engineer at the construction site.
Security staff discovered the break-in on February 16, 2025, when they noticed missing 1c x240 and 1cx 300 square copper cables from the Energy Farm area. They checked security footage, which showed Lawal and two others taking the cables. Staff members caught Lawal and handed him over to police officers. The other suspects remain at large.
Police investigations revealed how the thieves accessed the Energy Farm using a scaffold system. They cut the copper cables with a sharp tool before carrying them away. Lawal later admitted he sold the cables to someone at the Kwame Nkrumah Circles marketplace. He received GH¢2,000 as his portion from the sale. Police attempts to locate his partners or the buyer have failed because Lawal cannot help identify them.
