Pakistan, Saudi Arabia ink surprise defense pact as tensions soar

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed a mutual defense pact this month that surprised regional experts. The agreement emerged days after Israeli strikes targeted Hamas compounds in Qatar. Military analysts say the deal formalizes decades of security cooperation between the two nations. The timing reflects broader regional tensions and shifting patterns of alliances.

Nuclear weapons remain central to speculation about the partnership's scope. Pakistan possesses approximately 170 nuclear warheads, according to atomic scientists. Some Saudi officials hint that the agreement covers non-conventional weapons, while Pakistani experts deny that any nuclear umbrella exists. Strategic ambiguity may serve the deterrence goals of both countries.

The arrangement complicates Saudi Arabia's relationship with India, Pakistan's primary adversary. Recent border clashes between Pakistan and India raise questions about Saudi involvement in future conflicts. Regional analysts doubt Saudi Arabia would abandon its balanced diplomacy approach. The kingdom values economic ties with India while honoring security commitments to Pakistan.
