Parliament in Uproar as Bagbin Spares MP

Parliament Speaker Alban Bagbin chose not to punish Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie after chaos broke out during a Tuesday session. The Health Committee member tried to speak about striking nurses and midwives. Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor said no to his request. Dr. Afriyie refused to sit down and kept trying to talk. The Speaker ordered guards to remove him from the room.

Opposition lawmakers shouted loudly about the removal. The noise made it impossible to continue the meeting. Bagbin stopped the session and sent everyone home for the day. Parliament met again Wednesday morning to address what happened. The Speaker said he would not send Dr. Afriyie to the punishment committee.

Bagbin talked with other leaders about the problem. They decided to fix things through talking instead of formal discipline. He wants members to learn from what happened without harsh consequences. The Speaker hopes this approach keeps peace among lawmakers. He said future problems should be avoided through better understanding of rules.
