PASTEF Gambia's Mayorro Sidibeh rages at Assembly over party fee hike

PASTEF The Gambia Public Relations Officer, Mayorro Sidibeh, criticized the National Assembly for doubling political party registration costs to D2 million. The legislative body also raised presidential nomination deposits from D10,000 to D1 million. Sidibeh labeled these changes as attacks on democratic participation that prevent young Gambians from political involvement. He argued the measures create wealth-based barriers rather than protect democratic processes. The official characterized the decisions as legislative elitism that threatens grassroots political movements.

Sidibeh rejected arguments that politics requires a serious financial commitment. He maintained that political participation should depend on public support and integrity rather than economic resources. The spokesperson warned these increases would strengthen existing political privilege while blocking genuine community-based organizations. He noted that established parties originally emerged with limited funding and grassroots backing. Sidibeh called for immediate policy reversal and praised legislators who opposed the changes.
