Bad things are happening in a part of Congo called South Kivu. Some soldiers who should protect people have been stealing from them and hurting them instead. These soldiers belong to different groups, including the Congolese army and helpers from another country called Burundi.
The army has caught 84 of its own soldiers who did wrong things, and these soldiers will face punishment. There is also a group called M23 that fights against the army. They have moved very close to an important airport and recently took control of a big city called Goma.
An important church leader named Archbishop Rusengo has spoken up about these problems. He wrote a letter saying he was worried because soldiers were putting their weapons near people's homes. He thinks this could put many families in danger. The city leaders have told everyone they must stay inside their homes at night to stay safe.
The president of Congo, Felix Tshisekedi, has asked another country called Chad to help fight against M23. Many new fighting groups have appeared in the area. Before 2022, there were already 250 groups fighting in eastern Congo. After 2022, more than 20 new groups joined them.
