PC makers scramble as DRAM drought hits hard

The PC industry is hitting a major memory wall. Major manufacturers like ASUS, HP, and Dell are desperately trying to lock in long-term supply agreements for DRAM, but suppliers like Samsung and SK hynix simply cannot meet the massive demand. This severe shortage is expected to drive DDR5 prices up drastically next year, forcing builders into tough choices with no good solutions.

Companies basically have three bad options. They can raise retail prices for finished PCs, which would hurt consumer demand. They can ship products with less memory, like making 8GB the base configuration for mid-range laptops, despite software needing more. Or they can simply delay new product launches entirely, a strategy already seen with upcoming graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD. This means current hardware could linger on shelves much longer, creating a famine for next-generation releases. Industry insiders admit the situation looks bleak with little immediate relief in sight.
