Peru president doubles salary despite 2% approval rating

Peru's leader Dina Boluarte gave herself a huge pay raise. She doubled her monthly salary to over $10,000 despite having the worst approval rating ever recorded. Only 2% of Peruvians support her leadership right after she signed the controversial decree. Citizens called her completely out of touch with regular people who struggle financially. Social media users blasted the move as totally outrageous.

Boluarte never won an election to become president. She took power when Pedro Castillo got kicked out of office back in December 2022. As vice president at the time, she stepped up to fill the empty position. Her time as leader has been full of scandals and investigations. Officials are looking into luxury gifts she may have hidden and whether she abandoned her duties during nose surgery.

The economy minister defended the salary increase. He said other regional presidents make more money than Boluarte did before the raise. Her previous pay ranked second lowest among 12 countries in the area. Bolivia was the only nation paying its president less each month. Her new salary equals almost 35 times what minimum wage workers earn in Peru.

Angry protesters threw stones and eggs at her car during a recent visit to Arequipa. Crime rates keep rising across the country. Peruvians blame Boluarte for failing to fix major safety problems. Her approval numbers continue dropping as citizens lose patience with her leadership.
