Peter Obi pushes education for inmates, vows to cover exam fees

Peter Obi says prisoners in Anambra State correctional facilities need help paying for their NECO exams, or they'll get kicked out of the testing after Monday. Representatives from the inmates hit him up, explaining that 148 people across four facilities registered for the exams at around 30k each plus logistics, and Obi promised to guarantee the payment while rallying his connections to cover the total cost of about 4.7 million naira.

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate referenced a California State University program he saw that helps formerly incarcerated people reintegrate into society, and he's questioning whether prisoners in other Nigerian states get similar educational opportunities. He's pushing the idea that correctional centers should actually focus on rehabilitation through education and skill training since many people end up there because they lacked those resources in the first place.
