Phosa flags SA unrest, backs direct vote

A senior African National Congress figure, Mathews Phosa, has declared the nation's governance system fundamentally broken and called for the direct election of the president by popular vote. The former Mpumalanga premier stated that this constitutional change is necessary to restore accountability and public trust. He issued a grave warning that South Africa faces explosive social discontent due to widespread corruption and service delivery failures.

Phosa criticized the current model where Parliament selects the president, arguing it insulates leaders from public scrutiny. He advocated for longer prison terms for corrupt officials and a reduction in the size of the national cabinet. The ANC veteran cautioned his party that ignoring the plight of citizens would lead to further electoral decline.
