Piyush Goyal orders price cuts after GST changes

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal directed companies to transfer complete tax reduction advantages directly to customers. India will implement major changes to its indirect taxation framework starting September 22. The GST Council approved lower rates for hundreds of products ranging from household soaps to compact vehicles. Officials simplified the tax structure to feature two primary categories at 5 percent and 18 percent rates.

Luxury items and harmful products will face a 40 percent levy under the revised system. Goyal emphasized that complete benefit transfers would help both consumers and businesses prosper. The government pursues aggressive reforms to enhance manufacturing conditions and reduce regulatory burdens for companies. Automotive manufacturers have begun implementing the approved reductions for their customers.

Retailers must post comparison charts showing previous and current pricing at their locations. Consumer electronics prices should decrease by approximately 10 percent while vehicle costs may drop between 12 and 15 percent. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes coordinated with trade associations to guarantee smooth implementation.
