Police Constable Kills Senior Officer and Dies by Suicide at Ng'iya Post

Two police officers died Sunday morning at Ng'iya Police Post located within Alego Usonga constituency of Siaya County. Constable Martin Mwendwa broke into his senior colleague's home around 6 am carrying a G3 rifle. The officer shot Corporal Chesise multiple times through the chest and hands before fleeing the scene. Mwendwa ran toward Ng'iya Girls High School and fired random shots into the air. He killed himself at the school gate as other officers responded to the emergency.

Witnesses described both dead officers as effective crime fighters who served their community well. The shooting shocked local residents who gathered at the scene after hearing gunshots. Police have moved both bodies to Siaya County Referral Hospital for examination. Investigators are working to determine what motivated the deadly attack. The incident follows several similar cases of police officers killing colleagues across Kenya.

Police authorities report that trauma affects many officers who face constant community problems and dangerous situations. Officials have started counseling programs through the National Police Service Commission to help officers cope with stress. The new mental health unit works to prevent substance abuse and emotional breakdown among police personnel. March and February saw similar deadly confrontations between officers at bars around Nairobi. Police leaders call these events isolated but acknowledge the need for better support systems.
