Authorities in Yumbe Municipality discharged firearms to break up demonstrations on Tuesday after violence erupted between Muslim and Christian residents disputing the potential opening of a restaurant serving pork in the mainly Muslim district. Sheikh Kasim, a community figure who drives for a living, organized the protest against rumors that a Christian entrepreneur wanted to establish the business near a mosque. Multiple people sustained injuries during the confrontation, with images showing one man wounded by gunfire.
The protest leader said his followers were defending Islamic principles and warned that selling pork in areas where Muslims form the majority would create friction. Local officials countered that the demonstration disrupted lawful commerce protected under national guarantees of religious freedom and economic activity. Fadhil Lemeriga Kujo, who serves as the prime minister for the Aringa kingdom, described the conflict as unusual for a region known for peaceful coexistence among faiths. He pointed out that the area houses important religious sites for Catholics, Anglicans, and Muslims.
Kujo requested that the Interreligious Council of Uganda organize immediate discussions between faith leaders and asked security personnel to use measured responses when managing public gatherings. He stressed that all groups share the land and must maintain harmony.
