Portugal backs Morocco autonomy plan, praises Sahara stability and Atlantic projects

Portugal endorsed Morocco's autonomy proposal for Western Sahara as the most viable solution to the territorial dispute. Foreign Ministers Nasser Bourita and Paulo Rangel signed a joint statement in Lisbon on Tuesday affirming this position. The Portuguese government acknowledged Morocco's diplomatic efforts through United Nations channels to achieve a lasting political settlement. Both nations expressed support for UN Security Council Resolution 2756, which calls for realistic compromise between all parties. Portugal praised the serious nature of Morocco's peace initiatives within the international framework.

The Portuguese minister highlighted Morocco's Atlantic projects, particularly the Process of Atlantic African States and initiatives helping Sahel nations access ocean routes. Portugal recognized the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline spanning 6,000 kilometers across West and North Africa. Rangel praised Morocco's stabilizing influence throughout the African continent and its development contributions. Both countries pledged to maintain regional security and peaceful conflict resolution. The agreement reflects growing international support for Morocco's autonomy plan under King Mohammed VI's leadership.
