Uganda's Equal Opportunities Commission stopped a medical school from kicking out a pregnant student. Sarah Namukisa faced expulsion from Medical Laboratory Training School in Jinja for being pregnant. School rules said pregnancy breaks regulations and students must leave the program. The Uganda Law Society filed a complaint about the unfair treatment on June 10. Commission officials ordered the school to let Namukisa take her final exams.
Pregnancy causes many girls across Uganda to quit school before finishing their education. About 25 percent of teenage girls between 15 and 19 years old have babies. COVID school closures made the problem worse with over 32,000 teen pregnancies during 2020. Schools lose female students when administrators punish girls for becoming pregnant. Rights groups praise the decision because it protects education access for young mothers.
