President Pushes Local Authorities to Step Up for Vision 2030 Goals

Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa told more than 3,000 local government officials they must improve services to help the country reach its Vision 2030 goals. He spoke at the All-Councillors meeting in Bulawayo yesterday. The president launched new service standards and land management policies during the event. Local councils need to create a strong foundation for national growth across all economic sectors. Officials cannot afford to provide weak support for development efforts.

Mnangagwa challenged councillors to build systems that help Zimbabwe become an upper-middle-income country before 2030 ends. He said decision makers must use facts when making choices about community services. The meeting focused on measuring performance to achieve better results for citizens. Local authorities should always consider what benefits taxpayers most when planning projects. Workers need to develop habits that create major positive changes.

The president expressed disappointment about continued reports of poor performance from several councils. Some local governments have failed to complete required duties since the service blueprint started in November 2023. Officials must track progress better and fix problems before systems break down completely. The new minimum standards cover eight areas like housing, water supply, waste management and road maintenance. Performance awards will begin in 2025 based on these measurements.

Mnangagwa stressed that sound money management helps local economies grow stronger. He urged councils to align their budgets with national priorities and find additional funding through partnerships with private companies. The president warned that decisive action might come against councils that repeatedly fail to complete required financial audits.
