The President's Office decided to grab control of McCarthy Square from the Banjul City Council. Their cabinet secretary wrote a letter explaining this change. After fixing up the square for the 60th birthday party of The Gambia, the President's team wants to run things themselves. They spent big money on this makeover and claim they need to protect their investment.
The letter said they would list all items at the square with help from whoever manages it currently. When asked about this news, Banjul Mayor Rohey Lowe said she had just learned about it during her trip outside the country. She felt upset by this decision and believes the government keeps picking on her council unfairly.
Mayor Lowe pointed out several examples of harsh treatment. Her staff members faced punishment before any official investigation even started. The city council had no say in the Banjul Roads Project either. The mayor questioned if these actions happened because she was female.
Lowe mentioned she always shows great respect toward government officials. She expressed confusion about why they treat her this way. She joked that she fears they might someday march into her office and claim it as theirs. The mayor clearly feels frustrated by what she sees as a pattern of disrespect.
