Primary losers can run independent in September polls

WOLREC tells women who lost party elections to run as independents instead. The group's leader, Maggie Kathewera Banda, talked with Malawi 24 about problems facing female candidates. She feels sad that many women failed because politics costs money these days. Most women lack the funds to compete effectively against men. Political parties promised help but never delivered it.

Kathewera Banda pointed out that parties rarely properly support their female members. She worried that the ongoing abuse aimed at women in politics would hurt their chances. Despite these challenges, she encourages all women who failed in the primaries to stay strong. She wants them to enter the September 16, 2025, elections without party backing. These independent candidates might succeed where party systems failed them.
