Protesters attack Ecuador president’s motorcade during visit

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa's motorcade came under attack Tuesday when shots were fired at his convoy in Cañar province, according to officials and local media. Noboa was unharmed, though several vehicles were damaged.

The attack occurred as protesters, part of the Indigenous movement Conaie, clashed with Noboa’s convoy in El Tambo. Demonstrators were marking the 16th day of protests against the government’s decision to end diesel subsidies.

Officials said around 500 people threw stones and fired shots, damaging eight vehicles. Footage showed bullet damage and shattered glass on the president’s car.

Five suspects were arrested, and a criminal complaint for attempted assassination was filed. The attack highlights growing unrest and a national security crisis in Ecuador.
