PS5 SDK Leak Hints Secret Handheld

Sony plans to add a new power-saving feature to PlayStation 5 systems soon. The company briefed developers about the low energy mode that cuts power use without breaking games. This third performance setting joins the base mode and Trinity mode already available. The new option reduces GPU speeds and cuts memory bandwidth to save electricity.

Developers receive documentation showing major system limitations under the energy-saving profile. The mode restricts processors to eight threads and reduces audio processing power. Graphics cards run at minimum speeds and lose advanced features like ray tracing support. These changes drop power consumption significantly compared to normal operation.

Gaming experts believe Sony prepares for handheld device support rather than just saving energy. The restrictions mirror problems portable systems face with memory bandwidth and battery life. AMD chip insider Kepler L2 thinks the profile emulates portable hardware performance. Sony used similar preparation steps before launching the PlayStation 5 Pro console last year.
