Qatar plans to establish its first permanent diplomatic mission in Uganda after operating through a non-resident arrangement based in Nairobi. Ahmed Mohammed Abdulrahman Abdullah Al Zwaidi delivered credential copies to Foreign Affairs State Minister John Mulimba on Wednesday at the ministry offices in Kampala, marking what he called evidence of Doha's commitment to expanded bilateral engagement.
Mulimba welcomed the development following business discussions held last month in Qatar's capital. Commercial activity between both nations has expanded substantially during the past 10 years, with Ugandan shipments rising from 20 million dollars to 34 million dollars and Qatari goods increasing from 17 million dollars to 26 million dollars. Officials expect resident representation will accelerate growth in agricultural processing, minerals extraction, petroleum development, and technological cooperation.
Al Zwaidi noted that Qatar Airways doubled its daily service connecting Entebbe and Doha, demonstrating increased movement of people and commerce. Multiple cooperation agreements are under preparation for signature. The mission should begin operations during early 2026 as part of broader Ugandan efforts to strengthen Gulf partnerships.
