A cargo train jumped the tracks Friday evening and cut train travel between Khulna and other parts of Bangladesh. The accident happened around 5:30 pm near Utholi railway station when the freight train was heading to Chuadanga. One car at the back of the train suddenly left the rails just 100 yards past the station. The derailed car served as a sleeping area for train workers during long trips. People watching said the train had crossed the station crossing and entered the main track when disaster struck.
The crash completely stopped all train service to and from Khulna across the country. Station Master Mintu Roy called his bosses at Pakshi Railway Division right after the accident happened. A rescue train rushed to the scene to start cleanup work and fix the damaged tracks. Roy warned that trains cannot run again until workers finish clearing the wreckage. The derailment blocked the main railway line that connects Khulna to the rest of Bangladesh through the Darshana route.
