During their talks, Odinga urged Tanzania's opposition team headed by Tundu Lissu to speak directly with their current government leadership for Tanzania's benefit.
Odinga expressed hopes for fair and calm elections when Tanzania votes later this year. He pushed the opposition to work constructively with government officials to protect democratic values in their country. Tundu Lissu became the chairman of Chadema, Tanzania's main opposition party, earlier this year in January 2025, defeating Freeman Mbowe, who led the party for many years.
Lissu previously ran for president against John Pombe Magufuli in 2020 and finished second. The upcoming election scheduled for October 2025 will feature opposition candidates challenging President Samia Suluhu. She took leadership after Magufuli died, having served as his vice president. Tanzania has been under Chama Cha Mapinduzi party control since it gained independence.
