Raila Odinga traveled to Machakos today for the funeral of Colonel James Gitahi. The retired military officer died on March 7 when his car smashed into a truck at Kyumvi Junction along Mombasa Highway. The crash caused his vehicle to catch fire right away. He drove alone in his small car at the time of the accident.
The deceased served as husband to ODM-nominated Senator Betty Batuli Montet. Even after leaving military service, Gitahi kept flying planes commercially from Wilson Airport. During his military career, he flew former President Daniel Arap Moi around for nearly twenty years. He later became the pilot for President Mwai Kibaki from 1992 until 2010.
People who saw the crash said Gitahi was headed toward Nairobi when he tried passing a truck but hit another truck coming his way. The crash made his car burst into flames, leaving him trapped inside. Yesterday at Gitahi's church service held at Sienna Catholic Church in Kitisuru, Nairobi, Senator Montet talked about her deep sadness.
She ended up staying two days in the hospital after hearing about her husband's death. "Jay was a responsible man. We lived a simple life, but he was always there for me," she mentioned during the service. The burial ceremony happens right after the funeral service finishes in Machakos. Many ODM party members came to pay respects, including Senate speaker Amason Kingi.
